Uddhav Muni Ashram of Udhwa Block is one of the religious heritage of the historic Rajmahal, Sahibganj. It is said that in Dwaparayuga, Shri Krishna’s friend Uddhav Maharaj ji came here and did meditation for many years, as well as spread the devotion of Shri Krishna. There is also some belief that there used to be a cave here where people used to offer milk and water, then this stream used to reach Maa River Ganga.
Who was Uddhav Muni Ji?
Uddhav Muni was a prominent character in the mythological texts of Hinduism, a friend, and counselor of Lord Krishna. Uddhav Muni has an important role in the Bhagavata Purana. Just as Krishna preached to Arjuna in the Bhagavad Gita, similarly Krishna gave the knowledge of yoga and devotion through Uddhava. These teachings are often referred to as the Uddhava Gita. According to some texts, Uddhav Maharaj was also Krishna’s cousin as he was the son of Devabhaga, who was the brother of Vasudeva, Krishna’s father.
The Mahabharata mentions that Uddhav Muni was an advisor to the Vrishnis, whom they all believed in and respected. The Bhagavata Purana also mentions that Uddhava was a disciple of Brihaspati.
History Behind the naming of ‘Udhwa’ village
Udayanala has been flowing on the land of Udhwa for centuries. This is also called Udhwanala. It has covered many historical events in its zenith. Uddhavji Maharaj, the Paramsakha of Lord Krishna, had established a Yajnashala on this bank. Later on, the name of this village was changed to Udhwa after the name of Uddhav Maharaj Ji. Udhwa Bird Sanctuary is the only bird sanctuary in Jharkhand, and it is located in Udhwa.
Apart from Uddhav Muni Ashram, Udhwa is also mentioned in history. Harinath Shastri mentions in his book Meerkasim that it took more than a month for the English commander Adams to break the barricade made by Meerkasim near Udhwa Nala. The English cannons could not break the security wall built by Meerkasim from the Nala to the hill till the end. Then the British attacked Meerkasim’s army at night by deceit and killed 15 thousand of soldiers. In relation to this war, Colonel Malleson had written that if the British had not won the battle of Udhwanala, they would not have got a single foot of land in India.
