The Jami Masjid, Rajmahal, Sahibganj
The Jami Masjid in Mangalhat at Rajmahal of Sahibganj district in Jharkhand was built in the 16th century by Raja Mansingh, the Governor of Emperor Akbar. It is located on a high land that goes by the Arabic name “Hadaf,” which means the target of an archery butt. Hadaf was a part of Rajmahal Township, where the capital was moved from Gaur to Rajmahal in 1592 AD as a result of the Ganga River’s change in path and the subsequent depopulation brought on by an epidemic in 1575 AD.
Architecture of The Jami Mosque, Rajmahal – Past and Present
The Jami Masjid is made up of a fairly large prayer hall to the west, a large courtyard surrounded by a high compound wall with arched recesses on its inner-side, and three gateways on the north, south, and east, the last of which serves as the main entrance and has a porch in front. The building’s total size was originally 76.20 m x 64.00 m, but over time, both its southern and northern halves had fallen.
Presently, we have left with its southern portion measuring 27.43 m x 13.71 m, only. The mosque’s prayer room was made up of a big center hall that, from the outside, appears to be two stories due to the effect created by the large windows and the continuous parapet. There are also several niches along the prayer chamber’s western wall, some of which feature floral stucco patterns.
The mosque’s architectural features are so striking that a scholar claims it is a structure with “vastly more taste and far surpasses any of the structures in Gaur,” which refers to modern-day Bengal.
