History of Baradari, Rajmahal

Baradari has situated about 32 km from the district headquarters of Sahibganj, Jharkhand. Baradari is also known as Nageshwarbagh. Some scholars attribute it to Fateh Jung Khan, a rival of Raja Man Singh (1592 onwards), whereas another group of scholars attributes it to Mir Kasim Ali (prior to 1763 AD.), the Nawab of Bengal.

Baradari Architecture – Present and Past

Baradari is built on high ground, the building consists of an immense wall of bricks of about 9-meter height on a platform measuring about 18.10 x 16.25 meters. Presently, the remains of the wall are measuring to be 5 meters in height. There is a common arched gallery in front, facing the interior court, in the center of which is said to have a square building chiefly made of wood and known as ‘Rang Mahal’. At present, we do not find any traces of such a Rang Mahal.

Outside the enclosure were the out houses or sheds for servants and guards. In 1820, Buchanan visited this place and found it completely in ruined state as the timbers of its roof had been taken away to build the house of Nawab Rukunudaullah at Rajmahal.
