ToggleHistory of Rajmahal
The town, Rajmahal is covered with Rajmahal hills from one side and another side is honored with the presence of the River Ganga. These Rajmahal Hills are the creation of multiple Volcanic eruptions during the Jurassic which later formed the traps of the hills.
In the medieval period, On 12th July 1576, the battle of Rajmahal took place, laying the grounds for Mughal rule in Bengal. In 1592, it was Man Singh, Akbar’s most trusted commander, who as Viceroy of Bengal and Bihar, made Rajmahal, the capital of Mughal Bengal. Which was the largest subdivision of the empire.
Over the years, the place is also catered to as the center of major events. This owes to the overwhelming religious, geographical, historical, and cultural heritage of Rajmahal of Sahibganj, Jharkhand that it possesses today.
The Gems in and around Rajmahal
At present, the Rajmahal is expanded across an area of 7.5 square kilometers that is full of gems like Jami Mosque, Baradari, Akbari Mosque, Palace of Shah Shuja and Mir Qasim, Tomb of Maina-Bibi, Neel Kothi, Kanhaiya Sthan, Moti Jharna, and Udhwa Bird Sanctuary that narrate the rich history of Rajmahal.
Every site is unique and also has its own legacy. For example:-
Rajmahal Hills
The Rajmahal Hills are the creation of multiple Volcanic eruptions during the Jurassic which later formed the traps of the hills. These beautiful hills are spread over an area of 2,600 square kilometers. They are located on the northern margin of the Gondwana supercontinent. Today these hills are inhabited by the Sauria Paharia people and are also dominated by the Santhal people.
Moti Jharna
The Moti Jharna is magically wonderful. The beauty that it holds is no less than magic. The wonderful lush greenery and pearls-like water droplets from the waterfall are enchanting to the mind.
Kanhaiya Sthan
The village, Kanhaiya Sthan is famous for the temple of Lord Krishna. While going to Vrindavan, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu saw Lord Krishna here, and their footprints can also be seen here.
Baradari
Baradari was the province of Bengal at the time that was constructed as an architectural example. Today, the ruins of Baradari reflect the glory of richness that it had. Baradari is built on high ground, the building consists of an immense wall of bricks of about 9-meter height on a platform measuring about 18.10 x 16.25 meters. Presently, the remains of the wall are measuring to be 5 meters in height. There is a common arched gallery in front, facing the interior court, in the center of which is said to have a square building chiefly made of wood and known as ‘Rang Mahal’. At present, we do not find any traces of such a Rang Mahal.
Jami Mosque
The Jami Mosque in Mangalhat at Rajmahal of Sahibganj district in Jharkhand was built in the 16th century by Raja Mansingh, the Governor of Emperor Akbar. It is located on a high land that goes by the Arabic name “Hadaf,” which means the target of an archery butt. Hadaf was a part of Rajmahal Township, where the capital was moved from Gaur to Rajmahal in 1592 AD as a result of the Ganga River’s change in path and the subsequent depopulation brought on by an epidemic in 1575 AD.
Udhwa Bird Sanctuary
If you are in Jharkhand, this Sanctuary can be the reason for you to visit Sahibganj because Udhwa Bird Sanctuary is the only bird Sanctuary in the entire “land of the forest”.
The list of gems has like Tomb of Maina-Bibi, Tomb of Miran, Neel Kothi, Taksal of Jagat Seth, Bhognadih, and whatnot. This is barely a glimpse into the historical, cultural, and geographical significance of the Rajmahal.
