History of Sahibganj 

Sahibganj, also known as Sahebganj is situated in the northeast of Jharkhand. The historical background of Sahibganj is full of legends of Rajmahal and Teliagarhi fort, which today serve as the most prominent tourist attraction of the district. 

European people used to live and work around this place due to easy access to the railway, thus the area famously came to be known as Sahibganj which is composed of two words, sahib (master) and ganj (place). 

The foundation of Sahibganj as a separate district of Jharkhand was laid on 17th May 1983. This district of 4.25 km is situated mostly in valleys on the route of Ganga. 

Although when it comes to Sahibganj History, there is still a lot to explore and to be discovered. 

“Historical Masterstroke of Sahibganj” that I bet you didn’t know! 

Have you ever traveled by train? Let’s assume it to be a big bold YES. The glorious journey of the railway in India dates back to 1853 but hold on!  Did you know it was only after more than half of the century of its inception that the toilets became part of the railway? Surprising, isn’t it? But WAIT,  the incident that led to this “historical masterstroke” was the real game-changer. 

A letter to the Sahibganj divisional office (then part of West Bengal) was written by Okhil Chandra Sen in 1909. This railway toilet letter helped to toilets part of Indian railway trains. His funny cum embarrassing incident due to the lack of toilets in the trains inscribed history. The letter expressed his unfortunate experience and the importance of toilets on the trains.
