Sahibganj – Love for Someone, Feelings for Others. Sahibganj is a beautiful scenic town located in the heart of Jharkhand state. It is one of the twenty-four districts of Jharkhand state and is surrounded by Sturdy Hills and River Ganga. Sahibganj is comprised of two words – Sahib + Ganj. Sahib means masters, Ganj means Place, when adding both of these – we get the meaning of Sahibganj, place of masters or sahibs.

Sahibganj got its name because, during the British time, several English and European peoples lived and worked in and around the Sahibganj Railway Station.

History of Sahibganj

The historical backdrop of the Sahibganj district is rich and fascinating. It bases mostly on the historical backdrop of Rajmahal, Teliagarhi Fort, and Sahibganj Town itself. The historical backdrop of the Sahibganj district is indistinguishable from the historical backdrop of its parent district of Santhal Pargana with its base camp at Dumka and is related with the histories of Godda, Dumka, Deoghar, and Pakur.

As an immediate outcome of the Santhal Hul or Rebellion of 1854-55 drove by Sido and Kanu brothers Santhal Pargana has been made as a different district in 1855 by ceding segments of Bhagalpur (currently in Bihar) and Birbhum (which is as of now in West Bengal). The whole Santhal Pargana alongside segments of the present Hazaribagh, Munger, Jamui, Lakhisarai, Begusarai, Saharsa, a piece of Purnia and Bhagalpur, areas were named as “Jungle Terai” by the English on the assumption of Diwani in September 1763 from Shah Alam II at Allahabad which took place after Allahabad Treaty.

The government thought about the Paharis and other tribals of Rajmahal hills as a demographically immature segment of society and left on approaches and plans for their emancipation. The Jharkhand Movement for greater strengthening led by tribals and interest for independent statehood along these lines acquired force lastly on 15th November 2000, a different state named Jharkhand appeared involving the 18 districts of the Chota Nagpur and Santhal Pargana divisions.
